EUdigiTAC – Digitally Crafting New Communities of Practice is an international project by Studieförbundet Vuxenskolan Västra Götaland, Changemaker AB, University of Tartu Viljandi Culture Academy and Confartigianato-Imprese Udine co-funded by the Creative Europe program of the European Union and Region Västra Götaland.

EUdigiTAC is a digitisation project looking to showcase existing local efforts within handwork (textile) and artisanship in Sweden, Italy and Estonia, with an aim to integrate the local artisan communities into the digital cultural economy. EUdigiTAC aims to help artisans access, partake, influence and interact with the creation, distribution and content related to their art form.

EUdigiTAC connects a network of three local communities dedicated to traditional textile handwork/artisanship and education through a transnational cooperation to create a bridge between traditional forms of artisanship and the communicative/digital shift phenomena.

The project is focused on using digital technologies to explore: how the tacit knowledge related to the art form can be explored and developed with new audiences; which new conservation and business models can be developed for its “evolution” as cultural phenomenon; how to improve democratic access/education about digital cultural/artistic production/distribution/communication methods to a specific target group, artisans.

The projects are:

Sweden: weaving and adult education (folkbildning)
Italy: textile handicraft (including weaving, embroidering, knitting and sewing)
Estonia: textile (including weaving, knitting and embroidering).



The digitisation process will be based on existing local efforts to integrate the local artisan communities into the creative/cultural dynamics of the information society/economy, in the sense that this specific target group will be able to access, partake, influence and interact with the creation, distribution, use of information/content and intellectual property related to their art form, tangible/intangible products produced by them within the market of cultural goods, and the audience of new consumer/practitioners of said art form.

The specific goals of the project are;

  • ­  to build the capacity of “non­-digital native” artisans to adapt to the digital shift, providing them with skills to use digital technologies within their artistic/creative and business process;
  • ­  to test and implement new digital channels/methods of documentation, dissemination, consumption of intangible tacit knowledge, related to project­ specific traditional artisanship art forms;
  • ­  to test and implement new digital channels/methods of business operation, marketing, communication, of tangible cultural goods, related to project ­specific traditional artisanship art forms;
  • ­  to develop new/existing audiences to the project­ specific traditional artisanship art forms, either as consumers of tangible cultural goods, or new practitioners/holders of tacit knowledge (new artisans);
